The Lawyer of the Day program is an outreach activity of the Monroe County Bar Association (MCBA) Veterans Committee working in close collaboration with JustCause, the Veterans Outreach Center (VOC), and volunteer attorneys.
The program offers veterans onsite legal consultations. After an initial screening by JustCause and the VOC, volunteer veterans provide the veterans brief legal advice.
Common areas of inquiry include:
- family law,
- housing,
- credit matters,
- bankruptcy,
- veteran benefits,
- employment,
- health law (e.g., wills, powers of attorney, health care proxies),
- contract disputes, and property and deeds.
JustCause performs the case management, coordinates any referrals, and follows-up with the veterans. In addition, JustCause's staff attorney's support the volunteer attorneys with any questions. Importantly, volunteer attorneys have no further obligation beyond the day of the clinic. Volunteering for the Lawyer of the Day program is an opportunity for attorneys to directly support local veterans in need of legal assistance.
The program occurs on the second Wednesday of each month at the VOC, and usually lasts between 1.5 to 2 hours.
