Who We Are

Court Appointed Special Advocates® (CASA) are community volunteers, just like you, who stand up and speak out to help abused and neglected children.

When a foster care case begins, the courtroom is crowded with a judge, a representative from Child Protective Services, biological parents, family members, attorneys, and other courtroom staff. Even though the child should be the priority in the room, the judges, caseworkers, and service providers who determine the child’s future simply do not have adequate time to understand the specific needs of each and every child, instead focusing on the legal processes.

By speaking for the child, CASA ensures that the wishes and needs of the child are not overlooked by the many competing interests at play.

What We Do

CASA Advocates: Work alongside attorneys, caseworkers, and other providers of social services, as well as the parents and families of the children. Interview parents, family members, teachers, doctors, foster parents, and other adults who may have information about the child. Express concerns to the court about any issues or concerns relating to the child’s educational, medical, or emotional needs, and the most appropriate, permanent placement for that child. Form trusting relationships with the children they serve and represent the children’s best interests at all times. Advocate Requirements: CASA Advocates must be at least 21 years old. Participate in a pre-screening process which includes successfully passing criminal history and child abuse registry checks. Participate in pre-service training composed of classroom and self-study components, observe Family Court and complete training assignments. Commit to a minimum of 24 months as a consistent Advocate. Volunteers spend an average of 10-15 hours per month serving as a CASA.
