The People's Pantry of Rochester

Who We Are

The People’s Pantry’s (TPP) roots go back to the 1970s.
That history reflects decades of trusted, community-based service responding to food insecurity in Rochester. Today, TPP exists at 555 Avenue D to alleviate hunger and promote healthy
nutrition by providing reliable, dignified, low-barrier access to groceries for individuals and families across Rochester and Monroe County. In 2025, the pantry served 33,451 individuals in
9,581 households, including 13,449 children and 3,162 seniors, with patrons coming from 39 zip codes and 24 cities and towns. TPP is also one of only two area pantries without zip code
restrictions, allowing us to reach households who might otherwise be excluded from support.
Our work advances health equity most directly through sustaining community services. We maintain consistent access to food, which is one of the most basic social determinants of health and a necessary foundation for household stability, disease prevention, and overall well-being.
What makes TPP especially impactful and unique is our self-shop model. Community members do not receive a pre-packed bag of processed, shelf-stable food items; they shop for every food item themselves in a grocery-style environment. This choice-based approach restores dignity, reduces waste, increases the likelihood that food will be eaten, and supports healthier outcomes because families can select foods that reflect their needs, preferences, and cultural practices.
Our self-shop model is intentionally built around healthier food access. We place a strong emphasis on fresh fruits, vegetables, and raw proteins, rather than canned and processed foods.
We purchase fresh produce and proteins at the Rochester Public Market. The Pantry prioritizes whole foods over processed products whenever possible. This matters because people facing poverty deserve the same access to nourishing food that supports better health outcomes as anyone else. By making fresh food and raw protein central to our pantry model, we are not only addressing hunger; we are also helping reduce the health inequities worsened by poor food access and diets dominated by low-quality processed foods.

What We Do

The mission of The People’s Pantry is to provide groceries, with
