Volunteer: Reading for the Blind!Do you like to read? Do you want to help others who can't? Our volunteers read and record national and local newspapers, magazines, and best-selling books so we can broadcast them for those who can't read on their own because of blindness or another vision, mobility, or learning disability. This can be done remotely and on your own schedule. All that is required is an internet-connected computer, recording software (we recommend Audacity because it's free and easy to use), and a friendly, upbeat speaking voice. Volunteer: Foster Caregivers for DogsCan you give a temporary home for a dog in need? One of our adoptable dogs would like to be your companion for a little while! Our shelter will set you up with food and equipment. Our dogs receive medical care from our shelter clinic. You provide a place to stay, daily care and exercise, and maybe some treats? We work around your schedule. The dogs are promoted for adoption through our website and social media. Many dogs have found homes quickly after a brief stay in a foster home. This is a great way for folks who can't have a "permanent" pet to help a dog in need.

Volunteer: Literacy Volunteers Wanted!LVOY is in need of volunteer tutors to help adults reach their literacy goals. The majority of our tutor training can be done remotely through online training. If you've considered becoming a literacy volunteer, this might be just the time for you to join us! Once meeting and gathering restrictions are lifted, we will complete paperwork and any final training needs before working to match you with an adult eager to learn. We have learners throughout Ontario and Yates County.
Tutors must complete an application and training. Tutor interests and strengths are considered when matching them with our adult learners. Each learner comes to LVOY with unique goals. We serve native English speakers who want to improve their literacy, pursue a high school equivalency diploma or professional license and more. We serve foreign-language speakers striving to become fluent in speaking, reading and writing English. We also help prepare students for the US Citizenship Exam. Tutors do not need to speak a foreign language to teach these students. LVOY provides ongoing training and staff support. Tutoring sessions are scheduled at a time and a public location convenient for the tutor and learner.
If you've been looking for a fulfilling volunteer opportunity that directly empowers individuals to improve their personal circumstances, please contact us to find out more about the work of LVOY!

Volunteer: Monroe County Health Department Seeking VolunteersPlease consider signing up as a volunteer with the Medical Reserve Corps. No medical experience is necessary! To sign up or ask questions about any of the opportunities listed below, please email Aaron Cignarale at aaroncignarale@monroecounty.gov. There are three different volunteer positions at this time: Isolation Home Visit & Education, Coronavirus Hotline Caller, and a Catchall Taskforce Member. Everyone will go through Personal Protective Equipment (PPE – wearing a mask and gloves) training just to be familiar with the process even if they are not planning on being on a field team. Because of the nature of the work, you should be able to commit 10+ hours/week for the next 2-3 months. Isolation Home Visit & Education: This position will require training for donning and doffing personal protective equipment. The job duties will include traveling to people’s home who have met the qualifications to be mandatorily quarantined until their symptoms subside. These people need further instruction on what quarantine means, what to do if their signs and symptoms get worse, and to be tested to see if they have COVID-19. You will also provide them with a kit to help guide them through the process. The personal protective equipment is a measure in keeping you safe. Coronavirus Hotline Caller: We are inundated with the call volume on the Coronavirus Hotline we have set up and need medical and non-medical people to be able to call people back and follow a script to answer their questions or gain more information. We would like you to call back people who did not give the hotline enough information, they have a standard question that can be answered with one of our scripts, or they need someone to help educate them on their situation. This could be explaining to them why they are not at risk, why they do not need to get tested for Coronavirus, who to contact for a resource need, etc. Also, some people may be needed to call a list of people under voluntary quarantine to ask and record their daily temperatures. Catchall Taskforce Member: As with most operations, there is always a small task, a workload getting out of control, or days short of staff. A “Catchall Taskforce” is being formed to include a trained group of people able to jump in and help out in every area with short notice. This may include jumping on the phone and making calls, helping with food delivery, receiving supplies when they arrive, clerical work, making kits for the Isolation teams, or even heading out into the field when necessary.
