Volunteer: Furniture Move Team Leader (for refugee homes)

Our Move Coordinator is currently facilitating 1 to 4 moves per month. These moves consist of accessing donated furniture, loading needed items based on family size, and delivering the furniture to the new home.

Move Team Leaders will receive hands on training prior to leading a move. They are not required to lift furniture, though it is helpful where possible. Keeping Our Promise pairs each Move Leader with plenty of resettled Afghan refugee helpers, who are working to complete their volunteer hours to qualify for our "Wheels for Work" Car Grant.

Move Team Leaders must be comfortable driving the organizations van with a trailer, or box truck, to transport furniture from storage to homes. They may also be asked to drive the refugee team home afterward.

Volunteer: Advocate

Appointed by family court judges, CASA advocates typically handle one case at a time until the child is placed in a safe, permanent home. Other people come and go in the child’s life, but their CASA  provides a constant presence the child needs to thrive and move on with their life.

Advocates start by getting to know everyone in that child's life: parents and relatives, foster parents, teachers, medical professionals, attorneys, social workers and others. They use the information they gather to inform judges and others what the child needs and how they are doing while progressing towards a safe permanent home.

You do not have to be a lawyer or social worker to be an advocate. We welcome people from all walks of life. We are simply looking for people who care about children and have common sense. As a volunteer, you will be thoroughly trained and well supported by our staff to help you through each case.

You must pass a background check, participate in a 33-hour pre-service training course and agree to stay with a case until it is closed (a year and a half on average). Read more about the requirements and role of being a CASA advocate.

Volunteer: Social Media Community Manager

This volunteer opportunity requires 2-4 hours of volunteer time per month.

A social media community manager for The Nurture Family Network is responsible for the growth and maintenance of that community. In conjunction with the group admins, their purpose is to ensure that every member has a sense of belonging and ownership and that the community creates value for its members.

Tasks:

Content creation

One of the primary jobs of a social media manager is developing quality content and posting content at least 4-5x per week.

Scheduling and planning

Weekly schedules, goals, themes, deadlines, and monthly and quarterly projections are really important in the role of a social media manager. Organization, direct communication, diligence, and staying on top of things are all a part of the volunteer role. This will occur in collaborating with other Nurture Volunteers/Network Admins.

Developing visual content

While writing is generally one of the most important skills that a social media marketing specialist will have, the ability to develop (or curate with appropriate credit) visual content—like photographs or video—is a major plus.

Engagement

Part of a social media manager’s role is engagement. This means engaging with individuals who comment and interact on your social media feed and relating conversation to what the community is all about. Engagement is what takes to grow a social media account or community.

Nurture Workgroup Participation

The social media manager will attend monthly or bi/monthly Nurture Workgroup meetings.  These meetings are generally 1 hour in duration.

Volunteer: Pick up Truck!

Frequently we are offered donations of furniture, tables, beds and or mattresses  that our clients could really use!  Our biggest obstacle is not having the right vehicle or muscle to move  or these items!  We are looking for someone with a pick up truck or something along those lines and a couple strong friends to help us meet these needs! This would not be a scheduled volunteer opportunity but one where we contact you when we have a match, a donor with an item and a client with a need!  Please contact Ruth at 585-368-2265, or rrappaportkristal@ywcarochester.org for additional information!

Thanks!

Volunteer: Walmart gift card

One of the housing options the YWCA offers is  treatment program for women recovering from substance disorder. We provide apartments for women and their children.  We do not separate families which makes us unique in New York state. Our Stepping Stones program has a stellar reputation, and we have helped countless families on the road to recovery.

We provide all the apartments with essential goods, including pots and pans, flatware, sheets, towels, etc.  We like to keep all the items provided in the individual apartments uniform, and we  find the best deals at Wal-Mart, so we are requesting Wal-Mart gift cards to be used specifically for this program. The YWCA is required to provide these essential goods to our residents, but the funding sources are drying up! Perhaps you would like to do this as a group fundraiser?  Or a competition? We would love that

Thanks!  Any questions, contact Ruth at rrappaportkristal@ywcarochester.org or call 585-368-2265.

Thanks!

Volunteer: Foster Caregivers for Dogs

Can you give a temporary home for a dog in need? One of our adoptable dogs would like to be your companion for a little while! Our shelter will set you up with food and equipment. Our dogs receive medical care from our shelter clinic. You provide a place to stay, daily care and exercise, and maybe some treats? We work around your schedule. The dogs are promoted for adoption through our website and social media.  Many dogs have found homes quickly after a brief stay in a foster home. This is a great way for folks who can't have a "permanent" pet to help a dog in need.

Volunteer: Monroe County Health Department Seeking Volunteers

Please consider signing up as a volunteer with the Medical Reserve Corps.  No medical experience is necessary! To sign up or ask questions about any of the opportunities listed below,  please email Aaron Cignarale at aaroncignarale@monroecounty.gov.

There are three different volunteer positions at this time: Isolation Home Visit & EducationCoronavirus Hotline Caller, and a Catchall Taskforce Member. Everyone will go through Personal Protective Equipment (PPE – wearing a mask and gloves) training just to be familiar with the process even if they are not planning on being on a field team. Because of the nature of the work, you should be able to commit 10+ hours/week for the next 2-3 months.

Isolation Home Visit & Education:

This position will require training for donning and doffing personal protective equipment. The job duties will include traveling to people’s home who have met the qualifications to be mandatorily quarantined until their symptoms subside. These people need further instruction on what quarantine means, what to do if their signs and symptoms get worse, and to be tested to see if they have COVID-19. You will also provide them with a kit to help guide them through the process. The personal protective equipment is a measure in keeping you safe.

Coronavirus Hotline Caller:

We are inundated with the call volume on the Coronavirus Hotline we have set up and need medical and non-medical people to be able to call people back and follow a script to answer their questions or gain more information. We would like you to call back people who did not give the hotline enough information, they have a standard question that can be answered with one of our scripts, or they need someone to help educate them on their situation. This could be explaining to them why they are not at risk, why they do not need to get tested for Coronavirus, who to contact for a resource need, etc. Also, some people may be needed to call a list of people under voluntary quarantine to ask and record their daily temperatures.

Catchall Taskforce Member:

As with most operations, there is always a small task, a workload getting out of control, or days short of staff. A “Catchall Taskforce” is being formed  to include a  trained group of people  able to jump in and help out in every area with short notice. This may include jumping on the phone and making calls, helping with food delivery, receiving supplies when they arrive, clerical work, making kits for the Isolation teams, or even heading out into the field when necessary.
