Volunteer: In-Kind Donation / Wish List

Each newly diagnosed individual who participates in a Breast Cancer or Gynecologic Cancer 101 at the Breast Cancer Coalition is provided with a PALS Pak, which contains useful and comforting items for those who are going through surgery and treatment. Each item in the Pak has a purpose. For example, the Susan Love Breast Book provides critical information and gift cards are added for those times when meal preparation is impossible. Mints can burn delicate mouth tissue during chemotherapy, so ginger candies, which may help reduce nausea, are included instead.

Items which are currently needed for the PALS Pak include:

 Dr. Susan Love’s Breast Book (Seventh Edition)
 Cancer-Fighting Kitchen cookbook by Rebecca Katz
 Writing journal, blank (no composition books or guided journals, please)
 Pocket-sized adult coloring book
 12-Pack of colored pencils
 Cetaphil Face & Body Moisturizing Lotion (Normal to dry skin)
 Box of herbal tea (of ~10-20 bags)
 Pocket Tissues
 Ginger sparkling water, 12oz cans
 Pair of warm fuzzy socks with grippy bottom
 Burts Bees lip balm (no grapefruit flavor, please)
 Gin-Gins hard candy
 Adjustable padded sleep mask
 $25 Wegmans gift cards Call (585) 473-8177 or email info@bccr.org to learn more.

Items can be dropped off at the Coalition's offices Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Volunteer: Reading for the Blind!

Do you like to read? Do you want to help others who can't? Our volunteers read and record national and local newspapers, magazines, and best-selling books so we can broadcast them for those who can't read on their own because of blindness or another vision, mobility, or learning disability. This can be done remotely and on your own schedule. All that is required is an internet-connected computer, recording software (we recommend Audacity because it's free and easy to use), and a friendly, upbeat speaking voice. People with podcasting experience are especially appreciated. Contact us and let us know of your interest: marian@nfradioreading.org

Volunteer: Color Your Community Green Volunteer

Inspired by Accelerator member organization, Color Brighton Green, Color Your Community Green (CYCG) aims to connect and organize concerned individuals, by municipality or neighborhood, to form a network of climate-focused citizen action teams that will:

Identify locally-relevant, high-impact climate solutions and develop strategies to move those solutions forward using the CYCG “Toolkit,” provided by the Climate Solutions Accelerator; Advocate for environmental justice and equitable climate solutions to be implemented at the municipal level; Determine the best path forward for their community, with support from the Accelerator, fellow CYCG teams, and other climate organizations in the region.

To achieve these goals, the ten active CYCG teams perform various activities ranging from planting trees, organizing litter pick-ups, educating community members on skills like composting or creating healthy yards, and learning about and advocating for local climate solutions to board members and government officials.

Wayne County Action Program, Inc.'s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program is looking for senior volunteers willing to lead courses in Powerful Tools for Caregivers.  This can be done entirely remotely from your own home.  If you do not have a computer that can use Zoom Meetings, technology can be provided to you free of charge to allow you to run Zoom Meetings on one of Wayne CAP's devices with a camera and microphone.  All of the training will be provided to you online as well, and all materials and support that you will need to provide the course.  Our courses are run by teams of two volunteers, so you will always have someone there to help you either run the technology side or deliver the information that is all scripted and will be provided to you.  All you need is a willingness to help those caregiving for adults or children in their lives, and Wayne CAP will provide the rest.

The courses last 6 weeks with one 1.5-2.5 hour course per week, and you will be able to set the schedule as it will work best for you and your co-leader.  Learn new skills, learn about new tools that will be useful to you in your own life as well as those caregivers you serve, and meet new people!

Volunteer: RSVP Prevent Type 2 Diabetes

Wayne County Action Program, Inc.'s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program is looking for senior volunteers willing to lead courses in the National Diabetes Prevention Program's Prevent Type 2 Diabetes class series. All you need is a willingness to help those seniors at risk or diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and Wayne CAP will provide the rest.

You will be able to set the schedule as it will work best for you and your co-leader, and shifting the schedule as needed is not a problem.  This course takes several months to complete because the focus is on making small changes to diet and activity in order to effectively make changes to one's lifestyle gradually over time.

Learn new skills, learn about new tools that will be useful to you in your own life as well as those seniors you serve, and meet new people!

Are you at least 21 years old and have the passion to empower, mentor or coach a young person?

The National Urban League designed Project Ready: Mentor to expose youth to diverse educational, developmental and career opportunities with increasing degrees of complexity, responsibility, and skill acquisition.

Project Ready: Mentor helps local communities across the country develop the internal resources needed to support youth by expanding the supply of well-trained mentors, creating and sustaining meaningful and supportive relationships between caring adults and youth, and directing those relationships toward reducing behaviors that undermine youth well-being and increase educational and employment success.

Volunteer: Pick up Truck!

Frequently we are offered donations of furniture, tables, beds and or mattresses  that our clients could really use!  Our biggest obstacle is not having the right vehicle or muscle to move  or these items!  We are looking for someone with a pick up truck or something along those lines and a couple strong friends to help us meet these needs! This would not be a scheduled volunteer opportunity but one where we contact you when we have a match, a donor with an item and a client with a need!  Please contact Ruth at 585-368-2265, or rrappaportkristal@ywcarochester.org for additional information!

Thanks!

Volunteer: Walmart gift card

One of the housing options the YWCA offers is  treatment program for women recovering from substance disorder. We provide apartments for women and their children.  We do not separate families which makes us unique in New York state. Our Stepping Stones program has a stellar reputation, and we have helped countless families on the road to recovery.

We provide all the apartments with essential goods, including pots and pans, flatware, sheets, towels, etc.  We like to keep all the items provided in the individual apartments uniform, and we  find the best deals at Wal-Mart, so we are requesting Wal-Mart gift cards to be used specifically for this program. The YWCA is required to provide these essential goods to our residents, but the funding sources are drying up! Perhaps you would like to do this as a group fundraiser?  Or a competition? We would love that

Thanks!  Any questions, contact Ruth at rrappaportkristal@ywcarochester.org or call 585-368-2265.

Thanks!

Ruth

Volunteer: Foster Caregivers for Dogs

Can you give a temporary home for a dog in need? One of our adoptable dogs would like to be your companion for a little while! Our shelter will set you up with food and equipment. Our dogs receive medical care from our shelter clinic. You provide a place to stay, daily care and exercise, and maybe some treats? We work around your schedule. The dogs are promoted for adoption through our website and social media.  Many dogs have found homes quickly after a brief stay in a foster home. This is a great way for folks who can't have a "permanent" pet to help a dog in need.
